Small Craft Skills Assessment & Training Course
This
course is designed for adults who already possess basic kayaking or
canoeing skills and are seeking to demonstrate competency for
instructional or program leadership purposes. This is not an
introductory paddling course. Participants must arrive with prior
experience and confidence in small craft operation.
We
will start the training at Camp Rocky Ledges in Milton, WV, then
proceed to Beech Fork State Park for the practical section of the
course. Please pack a lunch. Water bottle refills and snacks will be
provided.
Eligibility & Prerequisites
Age: 18 and older, Ambassadors in 12th grade about to graduate are
eligible if at least 18 years old but can not chaperone Girl Scouts in
this activity until after October 1 of the year they graduate.
Participants must pass a swim assessment at the start of the
course:
Jump into deep water (overhead depth)
Swim across
and return
Tread water for 1 minute
Participants
should expect to be actively involved in both classroom and
water-based instruction and will get wet. Dress accordingly.
Skills Assessment & Training Includes
Participants
must demonstrate proficiency in:
Entering and exiting
craft from land and from the water
Basic paddling control:
turning right/left, full circle, straight-line travel
Safe
capsizing and exiting a craft
Unswamping a vessel
Trading
places in a canoe while afloat
Safety Staffing
Requirements
CPR/First Aid certification is not required
for the Small Craft Instructor.
