Join Experience Learning in the mountains of Pendleton County for an Outdoor Journey Badge Experience designed for Girl Scouts in grades 6-12!
Girl Scouts who have met progressions and are ready to step-up their outdoor overnight experience are invited to attend this event where they can earn the GSUSA Outdoor Journey badges and gain steps towards their Trailblazer membership!
Campcraft (similar to Trailblazing): Students will learn about the 10 essentials for backpacking/camping trips, learn LNT principles, set up camp including tents, sleep systems, kitchen area, and waste management. Students will learn skills to camp in all weather conditions.
Navigation: Students will learn how to use a map and compass to direct themselves. Students will understand how to read topographic maps, take a map/visual bearing, leapfrog, and use their understanding of maps and landscape features to locate themselves.
Water Quality: Students will explore a headwater stream. They will hypothesize the quality of the water and then test their hypothesis by completing studies into the biology, chemistry and physical aspects of the stream. Students will then link their findings back to the importance of freshwater for life and it's processes.
Survival Skills: Students will practice fire and shelter building using materials found in nature. If possible students will search for wild edibles and practice sensory awareness as well.
Astronomy: Students will observe the night sky. They will identify 5 circumpolar constellations and understand how stars play into our directional understanding. They will learn constellation stories and observe using either binoculars or telescope. If the moon is up students will observe the moon and talk about its processes.
Art in Nature: Students will explore the relationship between art and the natural world. Students will practice landscape art, physical land art, and poetry or freeform nature writing while gaining an appreciation of their surroundings.
