Outdoor Programming

Expanding the Future of Outdoor Programming

At Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, we're working to create more opportunities for girls to explore the outdoors, build new skills and discover what's possible.

As part of our strategic plans, we're actively developing a regional network of parks, camps, outdoor organizations and community partners to bring meaningful outdoor experiences to more girls across our 61-county service region.

Our commitment to outdoor Girl Scouting remains strong. We're excited about the possibilities ahead and look forward to sharing more as our partnerships and plans develop.

Follow along as we introduce new ways for our Girl Scouts to explore the outdoors.

Update on Camp Giscowheco

As we take this next step, we've made the decision to sell Camp Giscowheco in northern West Virginia. This decision follows a yearlong review of the property's amenities, use and long-term needs. We recognize the important place Giscowheco holds in our Girl Scout sisterhood, and we're committed to honoring its legacy as we look toward new possibilities for outdoor programming.

Please use this page as a place to find updates, explore our FAQs, ask questions and share feedback.

Access the form below to send a question to our team, provide feedback or share a favorite memory or photo from your time at Camp Giscowheco.

Camp Giscowheco FAQs

Why is Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council selling the property? toggle arrow

The decision to sell Camp Giscowheco follows a year-long review of the property, its use, the investment that is required to sustain it and how we can best use our resources to serve girls and volunteers.

Camp Giscowheco has been an important part of Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council’s history and holds meaningful memories for generations. We recognize and value that legacy.

At the same time, we must evaluate whether the way we own and operate property is the best way to accomplish our mission. Our analysis showed that maintaining a single, permanent camp property is not the only way—or necessarily the most accessible way—to provide outdoor experiences for the girls we serve.

Our strategic priority is to break down barriers to participation. For some girls and families, accessing a permanent camp property can involve barriers. We believe we can use our resources differently to create more pathways to outdoor experiences.

We are now developing a regional network of friends and partners who represent parks, camps, outdoor organizations and other community resources. This will allow us to offer a broader range of experiences with a broader geographic representation.

Who made the decision? toggle arrow

The decision to sell Camp Giscowheco was made through a collaborative process involving senior leadership, council committees and the board of directors.

This was not a decision made by one individual or one department. It was a deliberate process that included staff analysis, survey, external consultation and review, committee review and board-level decision-making.

How long has this been under consideration? toggle arrow

Camp Giscowheco has been the subject of a year-long review and evaluation. This decision was not made quickly. The year-long process allowed us to look carefully at the property and consider different approaches before determining whether to sell Camp Giscowheco.

What alternatives were considered? toggle arrow

Selling the property was not the only option considered. As part of the review, we considered what it would take to continue operating Camp Giscowheco and what other approaches could better support our girls, volunteers and long-term mission.

Through the review, we considered not only the financial investment required for each option, but also how each approach would affect our ability to serve girls.

The decision to sell Camp Giscowheco reflects the conclusion of our broader review. Not simply a decision about the property itself, but a decision about how we can best provide outdoor Girl Scout experiences in the future.

Why now? toggle arrow

The timing provides a natural transition point. When our ranger retired in March 2026, we stopped accepting new reservations. Because there are no current reservations at the property, we can make this transition without disrupting Girl Scout troops or outside groups that had already planned to use the camp.

Will camp/programming continue? toggle arrow

Absolutely! Camping, outdoor programming and education will continue to be an important part of the Girl Scout experience.

Rather than asking girls and families to travel to one permanent camp, we are working to build a regional network of outdoor partners and experiences that bring outdoor skills and high-adventure opportunities closer to the girls we serve.

Our commitment to outdoor programming is not going away. We are changing the model so that outdoor experiences can be more accessible, flexible and responsive to the needs of today's girls and families.

What happens to existing reservations? toggle arrow

There are currently no reservations to cancel or relocate. When our ranger retired in March 2026, we stopped accepting new reservations at Giscowheco. No Girl Scout or outside-group reservations are currently scheduled at the property, and we’ve had minimal requests for reservation information since that time.

How will this impact volunteers? toggle arrow

For volunteers, the biggest change will be where outdoor experiences take place—not our commitment to providing them.

Because Camp Giscowheco has been closed to new reservations since March 2026, there are no existing reservations that volunteers need to cancel or relocate. As we move forward, volunteers will see outdoor opportunities offered through a growing network of parks, camps, outdoor organizations and other community partners.

How can I share my feedback on this decision? toggle arrow

To help ensure our community has access to accurate, up-to-date information and that questions and feedback are gathered in one place, we've created a dedicated form where you can connect with us.

Whether you have questions, feedback or favorite memories from Camp Giscowheco, we invite you to share them through our online form here.
