Activities for Girl Scouts - November

November is a time for giving and what better way to show this than through Girl Scouting. The Council Service Project this year is “Project Bears, Books, and Blankies”, and can be downloaded by clicking here. This is a great community service activity to do with your troop.

During November, your Girl Scout Troop might want to try some of the following activities:

Daisy Girl Scout Activities

Daisy Girl Scout Song - Daisy Clean-Up Song (to the tune of "Jingle Bells")
Leader: Daisy Scouts, Daisy Scouts.
Let's tidy up the room.
Daisy Scouts, Daisy Scouts.
Time to go home soon.
Girls: Daisy Scouts, Daisy Scouts,
We're picking up our things.
Daisy Scouts, Daisy Scouts,
Hear our voices sing.

Baby Duck
It was just a bit of luck,

With yellow socks and yellow shoes,
So I may go wherever I choose!
Quack, quack, quack, quack, quack,
Quack, quack, quack, quack, quack!

Daisy Girl Scout SWAP - Girl Scout Cap

Tie off at the end.
Pony Bead Colors and Meanings:
Light blue
: Honest and Fair...The sky is blue and always fair...it rains on everyone or shines on everyone.
Yellow: Friendly and Helpful... Yellow is cheerful and friendly and the color of the sun which helps all living things grow.
Light Green: Considerate and Caring... Light Green reminds us of the tiny new plants that sprout in the spring and require our consideration and caring to grow into healthy plants.
Red: Courageous and Strong... Red is the color of blood, it represents strength and bravery.
Orange: Responsible for what I say and do...Orange is the color of fire, it reminds us to always be responsible, for fire can consume everything in its path if we do not use it responsibly.

Violet: Be a sister to every Girl Scout... Just like the violet flower that grows in groups, we grow best surrounded by our sister Girl Scouts.

Fall Placemats
Supplies:
clear laminating sheets or contact paper, sponges cut in leaf patterns, paing (red, yellow, orange, green), construction paper/poster board (brown) or paper bag
Instructions: Cut paper bag/construction paper/poster board to placemat size. Take leaf sponges, dip in paints, and decorate mats.Try to have several types of leaves for each color of paint so it doesn't get mixed together. After the mat is dry, cover with laminating sheet/contact paper. Girls may write their names on front or back with permanent markers.

Daisy Girl Scout Activity - Duck-Duck-Goose Promise Game
All girls sit in a circle. "It" walks around the circle tapping each girl on the head. As a girl is tapped she has to say the next word in the Promise... if she gets the word wrong, or hesitates too long to remember the word, then she jumps up from her spot and runs around the circle in the opposite direction from "it". The first person back to the empty spot sits down and the standee is the new "it". If there are no wrong words or hesitations, the running takes place on the word "law".

Operator
Instructions: Girls line up and a sentence relating to Girl Scouts is whispered in the first one's ear. The sentence is passed down the line until it reaches the end. The last
girl says it out loud. See how much the message changed!

Daisy Girl Scout Ceremony - Thankful For Ceremony
Have each girl come up with two things that they are thankful for and bring a picture, item from home, or make a drawing to represent these things. After each girl tells what they are thankful for have them put the item in a THANKS box or hang it on a large sheet of paper on the wall.
LEADER: We are here today to let one another know the things in our lives that we are thankful for everyday.
GIRLS: I am thankful for (have the girl put her items in the box or hang them on the poster).
After all girls have said what they are thankful for and placed the items in the THANKS box or on the poster, form a friendship circle and hold hands. Have each girl then go around the circle and say...
GIRL: I am thankful for (the name of the person standing at her right)
LEADER: I am thankful for (all girls names). Now everyone say the promise together.
Keep the THANKS poster and box throughout the year and let girls know that they can add items to it. Take it out throughout the year to remind everyone of the things that they are thankful for in their lives.

Wishing Circle
Girls stand in a circle holding hands, with three fingers gripped (the Promise Sign). Pick a girl to start, and as each girl wishes she squeezes the hand of the next girl. After the last girl has made her wish, everyone yells "Good Night Girl Scouts!"

It's a great big Brownie smile. (Smile and point to smile)

Grey Squirrel

Brownie Girl Scout SWAP - Fall Leaves
Supplies: small twigs, fall colored construction paper or craft foam board, yarn, glue, scissors, pin backs
Instructions: Have the girls go outside and find small dry twigs on the ground. Tie the twigs together with yarn so that they stick out at the top like a mini tree. Have the girls cut out mini leaf shapes of all different fall colors. Glue the leafs onto the twigs to make mini trees with fall leaves. Have the girls make a tag and glue the pin backs on or tie extra yarn to hang the trees.

Clock
Supplies:
different colors of craft foam, permanent markers/glitter glue/fabric paint, glue, pins
Instructions: Cut two different color and size shapes from the foam. Overlap them and glue together. Use permanent marker/glitter glue/fabric paint for the numbers and hands. Add the pin to the back.

Brownie Girl Scout Craft - Turkey Snack
Supplies: frosting, bag of candy corn (beak and eyes), bag of caramel candy squares (body), bag of Dove chocolate (base/feet), bag of striped chocolate cookies (tail and feathers), Thanksgiving cup cake liners
Instructions: Unwrap a piece of Dove chocolate to use as the base of the turkey. Place on a microwavable plate. Unwrap a piece of caramel and stick on top of the Dove chocolate bar for the turkey's body. Take a piece of candy corn and push down on top of the caramel (pointed end out). This makes the turkey's beak. Take another piece of caramel and push down on top of the first caramel. This is the head of the turkey. Break off the little white ends of 2 candy corns and push in the top caramel for the eyes. Take one striped chocolate cookie and apply to the back of the body to form the feathers. Put the turkey in the microwave for a few seconds to about 8 seconds just so that the candy and cookie can fuse together. (Watch this! Not too much time, or it will melt.) Serve in a Thanksgiving cup cake paper.

Tree of Thanks
Supplies: construction paper (brown, red, green, yellow), pencil, markers, scissors, glue, leaf patterns, tree pattern (patterns at end of document)
Instructions: Trace the leaf patterns onto the different colors of construction paper and cut it out. The girls may write what they are thankful for on the leaves. Write "Tree of Thanks" on the trunk. Glue the leaves on the tree and have each girl put her name on the back.

Brownie Girl Scout Activity - Thankerchief Game
Since the fall is the season to celebrate the things that we are thankful for, this is an appropriate fun activity to do with everyone. Arrange the group in a circle. Pass around a "thankerchief" (handkerchief) while reciting this poem:
Thankerchief, thankerchief, around you go
Where you'll stop, nobody knows.
But when you do, someone must say,
What they are thankful for this day.
The player holding the "thankerchief" when the poem ends, must tell one thing for which they are thankful.
This continues until everyone has had a turn.

Cotton Ball Races
Supplies:
cotton balls, straws, tape
Instructions: Make start and finish lines on the floor with tape (not too far apart). Divide the girls into two teams and then separate each team into two groups each - like a relay. The girls will use straws to blow the cotton balls across the floor to the next person. This continues until reaching the last player. The first team with all their players done wins.

Brownie Girl Scout Ceremony - A World of Color
Have the girls come up with a color scheme for the ceremony (i.e., red, orange, yellow, green, blue, etc.). Have the girls together come up with what each color means to them. For example red might mean love yourself and others. Have washable finger paints in shallow pans of each color. Assign each girl a color to present. One at a time have the girls come forward and say:
GIRL: The color ______ of the world means _____________________ to me!
Then have them walk over to the color of paint that they said, dip there hand in the paint and place there hand print on a poster, sheet or any other creative idea you may come up with. Once all of the girls have given a color and left their hand print, have a candle to represent each color on a table. Leaders will then sum up each meaning of each color that the girl came up with in one word for every candle they light.
LEADER: The color _______ of the world means__________ to us (repeat until all colored candle are lit).
Form a friendship circle and say the Girl Scout Promise.

Friendship Circle
Girls stand in a circle with arms crossed right over left and holding hands. One girl starts by making a wish and then squeezes the hand of the girl next to
her, while sliding her right foot forward slightly.Continue until all girls have wished, then everyone says "Good Night Girl Scouts!"

Junior Girl Scout Activities

Junior Girl Scout Song - The More We Get Together
The more we get together, together, together,
The more we get together, the happier we'll be.
‘Cause your friends are my friends and
My friends are your friends
The more we get together, the happier we'll be.

Thanksgiving Canon
For thy gracious blessings,
For thy wondrous word,
For thy loving kindness,
We give thanks, O Lord.

Junior Girl Scout SWAP - Bright Buddies
Supplies: pipe cleaner, yarn (bright colors) round beads with holes in middle, colored drinking straw
Instructions: Cut a pipe cleaner in half. Bend one half at the middle. Cut a 1-1/2 inch length from the other half to use as arms. Wrap yarn around 2 fingers about 7 times. Stick the bent pipe cleaner between your fingers, around the yarn wraps. Carefully slide the yarn off your fingers and stick the ends of the pipe cleaner through the hole of a ½-inch bead with a small hole. (hole about the size of a pony bead hole.) Pull the pipe cleaner so that the yarn is held tight against the bead. Put the "arm" piece of pipe cleaner between the two ends coming through the bead and twist tightly. Continue twisting until you have about an inch of twisted pipe cleaner. Slip a one inch piece of colored drinking straw over the body. Spread the legs in a "Y" shape to keep the straw from sliding off. Bend about ¼ inch of the ends to make little feet. Cut the loops of yarn and use a pin or toothpick to separate the strands for hair. Hot glue a pin back to the straw. (Can add googly eyes, if desired.)

Corn
Supplies:
white pipe cleaner, small yellow beads, brown twine, pins, glue
Instructions: Cut the pipe cleaner so when folded in half it is about 2" long. Add yellow beads on each side and then twist the top together. Tie or glue a small
piece of twine to the top for husk. Add the pin to the back.

Junior Girl Scout Craft - Clay Turkey Pots
Supplies: clay (self-hardening), rolling pins or something used to roll the clay, wax paper, circle shape (top of soup can or cup), plastic knives, toothpicks, colored feathers
Instructions: Roll the clay between your palms to soften it, then roll a piece bigger than your circle shape with the rolling pin. Press your circle shape into the flattened clay, this is the bottom of your bowl. Next, take a ball of clay about the size of your palm and roll it into a rope, trying to keep the diameter even the entire length of the rope. Dampen the edge of the circle and wrap the rope around the outer edge of the clay circle, coiling it around, on layer slightly outward of the layer below it, spiraling until it ends. Repeat the procedure making the vessel a widening shape of a turkeys body then coming back in slightly , still leaving an opening at the top for candy, flowers, etc. Now press the different colored feathers into the back of the pot in a fan shape to make the tail. Roll out another circle of clay to cover up where the feathers are pressed in. For the head, either hand build it using pictures or cut out shapes following a pattern out of the clay. Don’t forget to add the wattle and eyes! (google eyes are cute and work well). Attach the head and waddle to the front of the body and let dry. This is a cute gift or centerpiece for Thanksgiving!

Gobbler Pins
Supplies:
Construction paper/poster board/card stock (brown, orange, yellow, dark brown), yellow pipe cleaner, red string, wiggly eyes, scalloped edge craft scissors, glue, pins
Instructions: Cut different size circles with the craft scissors in the brown, yellow, and orange paper. Glue on top of each other, centered at the bottom. Add the eyes, a small yellow beak, and a small piece of red string under the beack for the wattle, Cut 2" pieces of pipe cleaner for legs and 1" pieces of pipe cleaner for legs and 1" pieces for feet. Take the 1" pieces and twist around the bottom of the larger pieces. Glue on turkey. Add pins to back.

Junior Girl Scout Activity - Building Tower
The object of the game is to build a paper tower using teamwork.
Supplies: 5 sheets of Newspaper per Group, Tape
Insturctions: Divide the girls into groups of 4—6 (depending on size of troop), next give each group 5 sheets of newspaper and a roll of tape. Have the girls work as a team to make the tallest tower and see which one stands the longest.

Flat Juniors
Instructions:
Print/copy the junior pattern (at end of document), with one for each girl, on cardstock or regular paper to be laminated. Have the girls color, paint, etc.
their "flat" self. They may add any accessories, such as earings, with glitter glue, etc. Add name, troop number, location on back. Send as a group to another troop in a
different state or country, along with a note asking them to write down all the adventures of the "Flat Juniors".

Junior Girl Scout Ceremony - Spirit Candle Opening
Have a special candle to keep burning throughout your meeting.
LEADER: This candle represents the spirit of Girl Scouting. It burns throughout our meeting to represent the friendship and fun we enjoy together. Look to the flame and see its challenge to you:
GIRL .. to do more than belong... Participate.
GIRL ... do more than care... Help.

Girls 11-17 SWAP - Friendship Knot
Friendship Knots are little knots made of at least 1/2 inch wide ribbon with a pin on the back.
Supplies: Ribbon, pin back or safety pin, scissors
Instructions: Lay one piece of ribbon across the other, forming the letter X.... Cross end "A" over toward the right, and "B" over toward the left, keeping the "B" end higher than the "A" end (sort of like the letter Z). Keep the ribbon flat. Don't fold everything close together, keep it nice and open for right now. It will look something like the pictures below. Take end "C" and bring it down, going OVER the first horizontal ribbon ("B"), and UNDER the second horizontal ribbon ("A"). Ignore the diagonal section of the ribbon that makes the "Z". Bring end "D" up, over the first horizontal ribbon ("A"), and under the next horizontal ("B"), keeping it to the right of C. Now EASE the knot together. DON'T pull. Gently pull on the ends, keeping the ribbon flat, until you have something that looks sort of like the last picture below.

First Aid Kit
Supplies: film canister, small band-aids, alcohol wipes/pads,small needles, index cards, glue pins
Instructions:
Fill the film canisters with one each alcohol wipe, band-aids, small needles woven through pieces of index cards, and glue in place. Add pins to the back, or pike a hole near the top of the back and add a ribbon with
a safety pin attached.

Girls 11-17 Craft - Squash Candle
Supplies: acorn squash, knife, string for wick, upholstery needle
Instructions: Cut the top off an acorn squash, remove the seeds and inside flesh. Use the hollow squash for a candle mold by threading a wick through the bottom of the squash using a long upholestry needle or other large needle. Seal the bottom with a bit of puttyand stand the squash in a large glass to keep it level. Next, pour your melted paraffin, remembering to keep some in reserve to fill the shrink well as the candle cools. You may have to do this several times, poking a small hole along the wick to relieve any trapped air. When your candle is fully hardened, cut away or peel away the squash shell and you are left with a wonderfully shaped unique candle. The flesh of the squash will leave a rustic patina on your candle as well. Flatten the base of your candle by rubbing it in on an old frying pan on low heat.

Girls 11-17 Activity - Scavenger Hunt at Mall
This is a fun out activity that you can have the girls do away from your usual meeting place. You may need to go to the intended mall in advance and talk to the perspective merchants about this. Include things that they won't have to actually get so the merchants aren't overwhelmed with requests for items from non-buying customers. Some ideas: Which store(s) has a pink sign?, How many stores sell shoes? How many mirrors in a particular store? What color is the soap in a particular store's restroom? What is the name of the manager at a store? What animal is on display at the pet store? Get a straw. Get a napkin from a restaurant. Get a sample from a cosmetic counter. What colors does a certain makeup come in? Which store sells a certain brand clothing? How many books on display in the bookstore? How much is an item of food at the food court? What color is the floor at this store? How many steps in the stairway near a certain store? What is the return policy at a certain store? What hours is the mall open? Another variation is to send them off with an imaginary amount of money and have them figure out what outfits they could buy without going over budget. Say they need one school outfit, something for church/community dinner and something to sleep. The one that comes back with the best buys and "spends" the least (a written list of what item at what store) wins a prize.

American Diabetes Awareness Month
Instructions:
November 14th is World Diabetes Day. Mention the facts and risk factors of diabetes with the girls.Discuss if any of them or their family members have diabetes and how they treat it. Talk about things that can be done to prevent diabetes. American Diabetes Association: www.diabetes.org

Girls 11-17 Ceremony - Friendship Circle with Wish Passing Ceremony
Girls cross their arms right over left, holding each other's hands. Designate a person to start the wish. Have that person make a wish and then squeeze the hand of the person on her left. As each girl does this, she also slides her right foot forward to signify that she had made her wish. This continues around the circle until everybody has had a turn. At that time everyone says, "Good night, Girl Scouts," turns under her right arm, drops hands, and leaves.

Note: When expecting a new girl in your troop you can leave the circle open, stating there is always room for one more Girl Scout. Also, by leaving the circle open you are thinking about Girl Scouts and Girl Guides who can't be with you. First form your circle. Then say, "Our circle symbolizes the unbroken chain of friendship with Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world. Now we will open our circle, making a space for a Girl Scout who could not be with us tonight, We always have room for a sister Girl Scout."

Golden Sun
The Golden Sun sets in the west;
Great Spirit calls Girl Scouts to rest.
We've had our work; we've had our play,
And we have lived the true Scout way.
Each day we've done some new good turn;
Someone to help not praise to earn.
We've been prepared for all in view,
And now we pledge our Scoutship true.

All girls should be standing and say the Girl Scout Promise.
