Activities for Girl Scouts - May

During May, your Girl Scout Troop might want to try some of the following activities:

Daisy Girl Scout Activities

Daisy Girl Scout Song - Daisy Happy Face Song (to the tune of "Brownie Smile Song")
I've something in my little hand that you just cannot see…
It's very very special and it's now a part of me.
The Daisy Girl Scouts showed me how to put it into place…
And when I clap my little hands you'll see my HAPPY FACE!!!

Motions:
First line - cup both hands together, palms together
Second line - bring cupped hands to chest over heart
Third line - open hands and cover face with open hands
Fourth line - clap on the word "clap", and make a motion outward with palms up

The Walking Song
Tune: "Are You Sleeping?"
Walking, walking (walk in place/circles),
Walking, walking.
Hop, hop, hop (hop in place/circles),
Hop, hop, hop.
Running, running, running (run in place/circles),
Running, running, running.
Now we stop (stop)
Now we stop.

Bumble Bee
Supplies:
white cardstock/construction paper, brads, scissors, crayons/markers, bee template (at end of document)
Instructions: Copy bee pattern onto cardstock/construction paper. Color and cut out. Attach wings with brads.

Daisy Girl Scout Activity - Scavenger Hunt
This is a great activity to do with the girls to get them ready for camp! Make your own scavenger hunt list. Instead of a written list, use pictures of different leaves, animals or anything you would find in a campground. Go it alone or pick a partner.

Paper Tulip
Supplies:
scissors, paint/crayons, glue, pipe cleaners, cardboard egg cartons
Instructions: Cut egg cartons into individual cups and cut edges into scallops. Poke a small hole and stick a pipecleaner through the center of each cup (glue or knot end). Decorate cups.

Daisy Girl Scout Ceremony - Miss Me/Miss Me Not Daisy Bridging Ceremony
Preparation: Make white cardboard petals for each girl, as well as a yellow center with a stem for the leader. Leader sits on a stool, and the girls cluster around her.

Leader: Our Daisies have been a wonderful group to work with this year. I¹ve asked each of our petals to say one thing about what we did. While I hope that each girl will miss me a bit, my job is to prepare them to move on. Please wait to clap until all our Daisy petals have crossed the bridge to Brownies. Here are the petals of Troop ____

Leader: "She'll miss me or miss me not, (insert name of girl)".  Take the petal of the flower and give to girl.  Girl will then say what she did this year and then walk across the bridge. Move on to the next petal until every girl has bridged.

Now Run Along Home
Now run along home and jump into bed.
Say your prayers, don't cover your head.
The very last time I say unto you
Is "You dream of me, and I'll dream of you."

Brownie Girl Scout Activities

Brownie Girl Scout Song - Purple Stew

Whip whip, whip whip,
I'm making a purple stew,
Shooby dudby do,
With purple potatoes,
And purple tomatoes,
How 'bout you in my purple stew?

Brownie Magic
Cross your little fingers, stand upon your toes,
That's a bit of magic, ev'ry Brownie knows.

Uncross your little fingers, down from off your toes!
Then the magic goes away, ev'rybody knows.

construction paper/cardstock, glue, yarn, brads, crayons/markers, girl pattern (at end of document)
Instructions: Copy/print girl pattern on cardstock/construction paper. Color and cut out. Glue on yarn for hair. Attach pieces with brads.

Brownie Girl Scout Activity -  I’m going on a trip and I’m taking……..
A great game for the girls at night around the campfire! The first person has to finish the sentence with something that starts with an “A”. The person to their right (or left) must repeat what the first person said and add something that starts with a “B”. And so on, and so on……. until you have went through the alphabet. This is fun for everyone, the kids and adults! If you are not at camp you can make a fake campfire out of cardboard! S’mores add a good touch to it as well.  This is also great for those long car rides going on a troop trip.

Butterfly Necklace
Supplies:
1/2" black pompoms (3 ea.) 4x4" felt squares, 6: black pipe cleaners, 3 mm eyes (2 ea.), 1/8' ribbon (24" length), glue, scissors
Instructions: Cut wings from felt & fold in half; shape wing. Fold wing over ribbon, wrap pipe cleaner around wings, and bend ends for antenna. Glue 3 pompoms together for the body; glue to center of wings. Glue eyes to head. Tie ribbon around for necklace.

Brownie Girl Scout Ceremony - Wish Bundles
Have each girl gather a stick & tie them all together with ribbon or yarn.  Ask each girl to decide on a wish that they would like to see come true. Then, the bundle gets thrown into the campfire. If the bundle burns all the way, your group’s wish will come true. This is even better if you do the ashes ceremony, too, because it makes the ashes more “magical” to the girls.

Brownie Closing
Oh Lord our God,
thy children call.
Grant us thy peace,
and less us all.
Goodnight...

Junior Girl Scout Activities

Junior Girl Scout Song - Kookaburra
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Merry merry king of the bush is he,
Laugh, kookaburra, laugh, kookaburra,
Gay your life must be, ha, ha, ha!
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Eating all the gumdrops he can see,
Stop, kookaburra, stop, kookaburra,
Save some there for me, ha, ha, ha!
Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Counting all the monkeys he can see,
Stop, kookaburra, stop, kookaburra,
That's not a monkey, that's me, ha, ha, ha!

Beautiful Bumblebee
Oh, you beautiful bumblebee!
Don't go buzzin' yourself at me!

Go and buzz at a flow'r instead.
Oh, you beautiful bumblebee!
Don't go buzzin'at me!

Junior Girl Scout Craft - Back Pack

Instructions: To make your frame, arrange the sticks in a triangle, shorter one across the bottom, with all the ends overlapping. Secure the overlapping points by wrapping twine tightly around each X several times and knotting. Fill your pack (the pillowcase) with whatever camping equipment you need. Tip: A towel or blanket in the bottom will feel better against your back! Fold the top of the pillowcase over so that it "closes" your pack. Center the pillowcase on top of your triangle frame. Attach your pack to the frame using three yards of clothesline. Cut off any excess clothesline when you're done. Use the rest of the clothesline (about four yards) to make the straps. Loop the ends together to make a continuous circle of string. With the frame facing you, loop the clothesline around the top of the frame. With your circle of rope hanging down, twist the bottom left to make a loop and fit it over the bottom left crosspiece. Repeat on the other side, and the pack is done.

Moonbeam Ring
Supplies:
scissors, tape, measuring stick, silver and gold metalic embroidery floss
Instructions: Cut one 30" silver floss strand for the knotting string (k-string) and two 10" gold strands for the base strings (b-strings). Line up the 3 strings with K on the left and the Bs on the right. Tie ends into a know, leaving about a 3"tail. Tape the tail onto a table/sturdy surface. Wrap K over and under Bs and up through its own loop. Hold Bs and tug K into a knot. Continue about 5 more times, and then flip so K is back on the left. Repeat unntil desired length and knot ends. Cut off extra.

Junior Girl Scout Activity - Camp Mime
Great activity to get ready for camp!  In groups, girls mime a scene from camp. Other girls try to guess. Have some time for the girls to discuss the mime and have practice. Some examples – toasting marshmallows, building a campfire, putting up screening, cooking on an open fire, singing at the camp fire, a morning hike.

Singing in the Rain
Instructions:
I'm singing in the rain,
Just singing in the rain.
What a glorious feeling,
I'm happy again!
(Here leader sings each line, others repeat)
Hold it!
Thumbs together!
(Everyone) A-ti-ti-ta a-ti-ti-ta a-ti-ti-ta-ta
A-ti-ti-ta a ti-ti-ta a-ti-ti-ta-ta
Repeat adding a new action each time. The final verse
should be:
I'm singing in the rain,
Just singing in the rain.
What a glorious feeling,
I'm happy again!
(Repeating) Hold it!
Thumbs together!
Elbows together!
Knees together!
Toes together!
Bums up!
Heads down!
Tongues out!
(Everyone) A-ti-ti-ta a-ti-ti-ta a-ti-ti-ta-ta
A-ti-ti-ta a-ti-ti-ta a-ti-ti-ta-ta.

Junior Girl Scout Ceremony - Key to the Silver Ceremony
In the ceremony, present each girl a silver key on ribbon symbolizing the the key to the Silver Award and Cadette Girl Scouts. Miscut silver keys are often available free at hardware stores.

LEADER: Tonight we gather to honor those girls that have completed their journey in Junior Girl Scouts. These girls are ready to accept the challenges offered to them in the next age level. The challenges are great, but the rewards are even greater. As they shed their green and don the khaki and light blue of the Cadette Girl Scout program they enter a world of new friends, new travels, new discoveries and new dreams. This is not the end of their Girl Scout journey, but rather the beginning of a whole new journey, and tonight we offer them the keys to unlock doors to the world of Cadette Girl Scouts.

Have 11 silver candles (or white candles tied with silver bows) arranged in a straight line on a table. 11 keys are cut from silver poster board (or white covered with foil). On these are written: PERSONAL GROWTH, UNDERSTANDING, FRIENDSHIP, VALUES, INTEGRITY, RESPECT, CHOICE, LEADERSHIP, SERVICE, THE WORLD, SILVER AWARD . As each candle is lit, the key (taped to the table) is flipped over the side of the table, so the audience can see it and what it says. Or, 12 Cadette girls may hold up the keys. Or, if you have a lot of girls, one may light the candle, while one reads the part taped to the back of the key she is holding up.

GIRLS:
#1 - I light this candle to represent the key to PERSONAL GROWTH. As I discover and develop all my talents and abilities may I always try to help others to discover theirs.

#2 - I light this candle to represent the key to UNDERSTANDING As I learn to accept who I am, may I always be accepting of who others are, no matter how different they may be.

#3 - I light this candle to represent the key to FRIENDSHIP. As I make new friends, may I never forget the old, for one is silver and the other gold.

#4 - I light this candle to represent the key to VALUES. As I discover what I value most, may I always protect my own values while respecting the values of others, no matter how different from my own.

#5 - I light this candle to represent the key to INTEGRITY. As I learn to always "do the right thing", may I remember to be honest and fair in all my dealings.

#6 - I light this candle to represent the key to RESPECT. As I learn to give respect to those around me, and respect the rules I am given, may I gain the respect of others.

#7 - I light this candle to represent the key to CHOICE. As I make more choices in my life, may I always be guided by the Girl Scout Promise and Law and my own values.

#8 - I light this candle to represent the key to LEADERSHIP. As I learn to lead others, may I always lead them down the right path and remember that one day they shall also become leaders.

#9 - I light this candle to represent the key to SERVICE. As I learn that I can do no greater good in this world than to give of myself to others, may I never forget those less fortunate than myself.

#10 - I light this candle to represent the key to THE WORLD. As I learn to protect it and its resources may I better understand it and improve it through my words and actions.

#11 - I light this candle to represent the key to the SILVER AWARD. As I work hard to achieve the highest award available to a Cadette Girl Scout may I never forget those who helped me along the way.

LEADER: As your name is called please cross over the bridge and receive your cadette vest and your silver key.
(all girls cross the "bridge" and receive a silver key from the leader or older Cadette scouts, and have their green vest replaced by a khaki one)

LEADER: You have each received a silver key. Protect it and cherish it for it is your key to a whole new world. The key represents your challenge to look wider still in all you do while always remembering to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, responsible for what you say and do, respectful of yourself and others, respectful of authority, wise in your use of resources, and always trying to make the world a better place while being a sister to every Girl Scout. If you are willing to accept this challenge please raise your right hand in the Girl Scout sign and repeat the Girl Scout promise with me. (all girls and leader say the promise together.

Juliette Taps
On this day,
We have come,
From the north,
From the south,
East and west.
All your dreams,
Will live on,
Juliette

Girls 11 to 17 Activities

Girls 11 to 17 Song - Camp/Troop Boogie
Chorus:
Hands up! Cha, cha, cha, cha!
Hands down! Cha, cha, cha, cha!
Do the boogie! Cha, cha, cha, cha!
To the front, to the back, to the side by side!
To the front, to the back, to the side by side!

Ladies and gents and campers too
Camp/troop _____'s got a boogie for you
You gotta turn around, and touch the ground
And step back, and step back and boogie on down

Went to the kitchen to eat a piece of cake
Then I thought about the campers and I ate the whole plate!

Went to waterfront, thought I'd sail
But all I did, was bail, bail, bail!

Went to the nurse, to get a pill
Came back feeling, mighty ill!

Went to the pool, thought I'd drown
Then I thought about the campers and I couldn't go down!

Went to the lake, saw some mosquitos
Came at me like flying torpedoes!

(Actions: Do what the words say. Clap during verses)

The More We Get Together
The more we get together,
Together, together;
The more we get together,
The happier we'll be.
For your friends are my friend,
And my friends are your friends.
Oh, the more we get together,
The happier we'll be.

Girls 11 to 17 SWAP - Camp Axe
Supplies: Brown fun foam, twigs, black heavy thread or small twine.
Instructions: Cut foam into shape of axe. Glue onto twig. Apply thread in criss-cross pattern over axe blade. Pin can be attached to thread.

Tea Kettle
Supplies:
craft foam, silver paint, glue, scissors, pins, plastic Easter egg tops
Instructions: Cut handle & spout from foam. Glue to egg top (opening down). Paint silver. Attach pin & label.

Girls 11 to 17 Craft - 2-liter Whirligig
Supplies: 2-liter plastic soda bottle, Colored marker, Paper, Craft knife, Acrylic paints and brushes, 3-foot wooden dowel (3/4 inch in diameter), Power drill, Hammer and small nail
Instructions: Remove the label from the bottle. This is easier if you fill the bottle with hot water and let it sit for ten minutes. Then use soapy water and a vegetable scrubber to remove any residual glue. Drain the bottle and let it dry. Come up with a decorative image to paint on the bottle and then to make a template by drawing the design on paper. If you choose a symmetrical image, such as a butterfly or flower, draw a straight line down the center of the drawing and then cut out one half of the image. If it's an animal, like a horse or dog, draw a profile of its head and neck. Tape the template onto the inverted bottle and use the marker to trace around its outer edge (do not trace the centerline or the base of the neck). Repeat this step a few times, keeping an equal amount of space between the outlines. Use the craft knife to cut along the outlines (adults only). Fold the silhouettes forward at a 90-degree angle from the bottle. Now paint the images. Once the paint dries, drill a small hole in the center of the bottle bottom. Then insert the dowel into the bottle. Tap the nail through the hole in the bottle and into the top of the dowel so that the head extends one quarter inch above the plastic. Set the dowel in the ground, and the whirligig is ready to catch a breeze.

Moonbeam Bracelet
Supplies:
gold & silver spaghetti string, scissors, tape, measuring stick
Instructions: Cut 8 feet of silver (will be knotting string-k string). Cut two 18" strands of gold (will be base stings-B Strings). Line up the 3 strings with K on the left & two Bs on the right. Tie the ends into a know, leaving about a 3" tail. Tape the tail to a table/sturdy surface. Wrap K over and under the Bs and up through its own loop. Hold Bs and tug K into a knot. continue 5 more times. Lift tape and flip strings s K is back on the left side. Repeat until the necessary length. Tie ends inot a know, leaving about a 3" tail. Cut off extra.

Girls 11 to 17 Activity - Build a Model Campsite
Brainstorm with the girls for a list of everything they might find at camp. Write the list on a large sheet of paper. Include everything: tents, camp building, flag pole, waterfront, boats, campfire, trees, rocks, grass, raccoons, campers, etc. Next have the girls, either individually or by patrols, volunteer to make specific items on the list. Have available all scraps of construction paper, fabric, popsicle sticks, cardboard, twigs, glue, play dough or plasticene, paint, yarn, scissors, and so on. The girls create the objects, then glue them on a piece of plywood (18x24 inches or 45x60 cm. is a good size). This makes a great display for an end of the year banquet. This activity could be done over two weeks....brainstorm one week, build the next.

Round, Round, Round, My Baby
Instructions:
Everyone stands in a circle and two people are
chosen to go in the middle. When the game starts the girls
link arms (elbows) so they're facing opposite directons.
Then everyone else claps in a rhythm and sings this chant
while the girls in the middle skip around:

Round, round, round my baby
Round, round, round my baby
Round, round, round my baby.
This is how you do it!

The girls in the middle choose another pair of girls by going
up to them (the song should not stop!) and jumpin in the
direction the next verse gives:

Front, front, front my baby (each pair of girls-each girl
from the middle and the girl form the circle she's chosen to
replace her-jump facing each other).

Back, back, back, my baby (pairs jump back to back).
Side, side, side, my baby (pairs jump side by side).
This is how you do it!
The new girls go into the middle and the song repeats.

Girls 11 to 17 Ceremony - Carry the Sun Inside You Ceremony
LEADER SAYS to the girls as she gives each girl a Yellow gemstone, (you can make it a necklace, pin, or bracelet if you choose).
Within you lies a creative, resourceful person.
You have qualities that get better every day.
You have the courage and strength to see things through.
You have a light that shines inside you.
You have known the truth of yesterday, and you have an inner map that will lead the way to a beautiful tomorrow.
You have gifts that have never even been opened and personal journeys waiting to be explored.
You have SO much going for you.
You are a special person, and you have a future that is in the best of hands.
And you need to remember:
If you have plans you want to act on and dreams you've always wanted to come true,
You have what it takes, because YOU HAVE YOU!
