Activities for Girl Scouts  - January

January is great time for fun indoor activities to keep the girls spirits up while the weather is cold.  It is also a great time for girls to prepare for the Girl Scout Cookie Sale.

During January, your Girl Scout Troop might want to try some of the following activities:

Smile a friendly smile and say, May I help someone today?

Gumdrop Song
If all of the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops,
Oh, what a rain it would be.
I'd lie outside with my mouth open wide.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
If all of the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops,
Oh, what a rain it would be!

Daisy Girl Scout Ceremony - 7 Daisies in a Week
Speaking parts: 7 Girl Scouts
Props: Make a large poster for each girl to hold. On each Daisy, print the appropriate day of the week.
SUN-DAISY: My name is Sun-Daisy, and we’re here to speak about Juliette Low and Girl Scout Week. Just before the Civil War, Juliette was born in Savannah, Georgia, on October 31st.
MON-DAISY: Daisy was her nickname throughout her living days. She loved games and writing and performing in plays. When Daisy grew up, she began the Girl Guides. Her first troop was in Scotland, with seven girls by her side.
TUES-DAISY: Daisy sailed to America; March 12 was the day she started a troop called Girl Scouts U.S.A. Eighteen girls met with Daisy very eager to start to make uniforms and badges, each doing her part.
WEDNES-DAISY: Daisy spoke of the law for all scouts to learn and told of requirements for badges to earn. The troop went on hikes along nature trails, watching birds of all kinds and recording details.
THURS-DAISY: Sports were important to keep the girls fit. Basketball was the first game to become a big hit; Daisy told the girls of camping under stars shining bright. Destination...Camp Lowlands, the first Scout campsite.
FRI-DAISY: For the rest of her life Daisy spread the word ‘round to millions of girls, in town after town. Shortly after her death a World Friendship fund began to honor this grand lady and her work throughout the land.
SATUR-DAISY: Each year we partake in a friendship celebration with Scouts ‘round the world and with great dedication. We’ll remember Juliette Low of who we will speak, for we’re proud to be Daises each day of the week.
NOTES: If you have more than seven girls, let one read and one hold the Daisy.

Our Father
Our Father, Our Father
Once again, once again
We would ask your blessing,
We would ask your blessing
Amen, amen.

Have bowls full of the items below and one large bowl in the center. Each girl reads a line from below then scoops that item into the large bowl. At the end you will have a fun snack that the girls can eat!

  1. Girl scouts come in all colors, from around the world. Every Girl Scout is a Sister, no matter where she is from, no matter the language she speaks, no matter the color of her skin. Girl Socuts are the colors of the rainbow. (M&M Candies)
  2. We have a promise and a Law. On our honor, we will try to do our best to be fair and square. (Chex Cereal)
  3. Some of us are tall some of us are small. When we get together, size doesn’t matter at all. (Pretzel thins and mini marshmallows)
  4. Sometimes we are nutty and we love to joke and play. We’d love to put a Girl Scout smile into everybody’s day. (nuts)
  5. When we get together, we seem to make circles. We may sit in circles, play circle games, and make a friendship circle. You could say that we are well-rounded. (Cheerios)
  6. When we are busy planning a project, or doing a craft, we pop around until we’re done. (Popcorn)
  7. Girl Scouts respect all living things. The earth is our home, and we want to keep it safe for everyone. (Animal crackers)
  8. Girl Scouts are “chips off the old block.” Girl Scoutning began in 1912. Since then we all have been part of a tradition, and are proud to be part of the future. (Potato chips or chocolate chips)
  9. We get a kick out of wearing our uniforms, learning new things, helping others, and being together with our friends. (Kix Cereal)
  10. Young Girl Scouts may be hard to resist because they are fresh, sweet and new. But the older Girl Scout may be more fun because she has more experience than you! (Raisens)

For the Joy
For the jpy at our board,
We thank thee Lord.
For the joy at our board,
We thank thee Lord.

On Top of Spaghetti
On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball, when somebody sneezed.
It rolled off the table, and onto the floor,
And then my poor meatball, rolled out the door.
It rolled in the garden, and under a bush,
And then my poor meatball was nothing but mush.
the mush was as tasty as tasty could be,
And early next summer, it grew into a tree.
The tree was all covered with beautiful moss;
It grew lovely meatballs and tomato sause.
So if you eat spaghetti all covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatball and don't ever sneeze. ACHOO!

Junior Girl Scout SWAP - The Melted Snowman
Supplies:  baby oil, black fun foam, orange fun foam, a small stick, wiggle eyes and a small clear plastic baggie.
Instructions: pour a small amount of baby oil into the baggie. Next cut out black buttons and a hat out of the black fun foam. Then cut out a carrot nose from the orange fun foam. Take the stick, wiggle eyes, hat, buttons and nose and put them in the bag. Now you have a melted snowman.

Root Beer Float
Supplies:
mini plastic cups - aka communion cups, pins, glue gun, large pompoms (brown & white), small pompoms (red), coffee stirrers, scissors
Instructions: Cut coffee stirrers to just stick out over top of "glass". Cover bottom of "glass" with hot glue. Add brown pompom, stirrer on the side, more glue, then white
pompom. Top off with a little more glue, then red pompom. Attach pin & label.

Junior Girl Scout Craft - Winter Snow Globe
Supplies: glass jar (smaller size jar is good), hot glue gun, mineral oil, or baby oil (see receipe below for another option), sand or egg shells or glitter, rolling pin, zip-lock bag, plastic ornament, small piece of cloth, rubber band & ribbon, scissors.
Instructions: Take an empty jar and wash it out. Allow the jar to dry out completely so no water remains in the jar. Plug the hot glue gun in so it will have time to warm up. Place your Plastic Ornament in the center of your jar's lid and place the jar on it to make sure that the plastic ornament will fit in the jar once the lid is closed. Put some hot glue on the center of the inside of your lid, then place your plastic ornament onto the glue. If your plastic ornament sets too low in the jar lid, add some hot glue, wait for the glue to set up, then add more hot glue until the plastic ornament sets high enough. If too much glue is showing, cover the glue with your crushed egg shells or sand (you can use colored sand or sand from your sandbox). Make sure that whatever you add stays in the middle of the jar's lid, if you don't you may have problems keeping in the liquids. You want an air tight Snow Globe when you are done.  Save the egg shells from your breakfast for this one... wash the egg out of the shell and allow the shell to dry completely. When it is dry, place the egg shells into a large zip-lock sandwich page. Close the bag nearly all of the way (Leave a small opening to allow the air to escape from the bag.). Take your rolling pin and roll it over the egg shells. The smaller the egg shell the better. Allow the work to set up and glue to cool before doing this next step. Add the mineral oil (nice consistency for your snowflakes) or baby oil (a thicker consistency for your snowflakes) by pouring the liquid into the jar. Fill the jar about 3/4s of the way, careful to not add too much. Next add the crushed egg shells. You can add as much snow as you like, careful not to add too much.  Add a touch of glitter to make the snow appear to sparkle. Put the hot glue around the inside edge of your lid. Carefully screw the lid onto your jar. Try to tighten the lid as tight as you can so that the jar will be sealed. (We don't want the liquid to flow out of the jar!).  If you don't like the looks of the lid showing, you can cut out a piece of cloth to put around the jar's lid.  Lay the lid on the fabric to see what size you need to cut.  Then cut out a square to fit around your jar's lid.  Take a rubber band and put it onto the fabric to hold the fabric in place. Then take a piece of ribbon and tie around the lid and fabric to add a nice finishing touch!
If you prefer to use water to fill the globe, use the following receipte:
Snow Globe Water Recipe
Distilled Water (about 2 cups)
1/4 tsp bleach
2 oz bottle of liquid glycerin
... use a fine imidescent glitter for the snow

Paper Snowflakes
Supplies:
scissors, paper/cardstock (various colors), pen/pencil/marker
Instructions: Fold the paper in half diagonally. Fold that triangle in half. Fold the top third of the triangle partway down. Fold the bottom third up over the first
and flatten. Trim off the points. Draw a design (doesn't have to be an actual snowflake) on one side or copy a pattern. Cut it out, leaving some folded edges, and
then unfold. Girls can label with their names if wanted.

Supplies:  A roll of toilet paper for each team, sheet of orange, black, red and yellow construction paper for each team, hat for each team, scissors for each team

Once they've built their "Frosty" they can utilize the hat and construction paper to decorate "Frosty." Put a time limit on decorating. Give a prize for the first completed Frosty, most unique Frosty, ugliest Frosty, cutest Frosty, etc.

Unscramble the News
Supplies:
2 newspapers
Instructions: Divide the girls into tow teams. Newspapers are scattered all over the floor, with the two papers mixed together. Leader signals the start. The first team
to get a whole paper in order correctly wins.

Instructions: Give each girl a piece of cord, sting or floss to make a necklace. Give each girl a colored bead to represent each part of the law describe below. As each part of the law is read, have each girl string that color to form a beautiful gems necklace.
LEADER:  True treasure in life, is not silver or gold.  More precious than jewels are the values we hold.  I will do my best to be:

GIRL:  Friendly and helpful as full of loving light as the glowing opal.

Girl Scout Ages 11 - 17 Activities

Girl Scouts Ages 11 - 17 Song
There's a job to do, there's a fight to win
Follow me, girls, follow me
And it won't get done 'til we all pitch in
Lift your chin with a grin and follow me.

Chorus:
Follow me, girls, follow me
When you think you're really beat
That's the time to lift your feet
And follow me, boys, follow me
Pick 'em up, put 'em down and follow me.

It's a long, long climb but we've got the will
Follow me, girls, follow me
When you reach the top then it's all downhill
'Til you drop don't stop and follow me.

Repeat chorus

Though the journey's end is beyond our sight
Follow me, girls, follow me
If you do your best then you've done alright
Pack you load, hit the road and follow me.

Repeat chorus

(troop number) is the troop I'm in
Follow me, girls, follow me
Camping, hiking, adventure to the end
Don't be feeble, trail the Eagle, follow me.

The Scout's Winter Song
Tune of "If You're Happy & You Know It"
If you have a cold and you know it blow your nose.
If you have a cold and you know it blow your nose.
If your really have a cold, then grab just one of those,
If you really have a cold, blow your nose.
If you're a Scout and you know it say 'Do Your Best'.
If you're a Scout and you know it say 'Do Your Best'.
If you're a Scout and you know it, then your deeds will surely show it.
If you're a Scout and you know it say 'Do Your Best'.
If you're in a snowball fight, duck your head.
If you're in a snowball fight, duck your head.
If you're in a snowball fight, then don't freeze up in fright.
If you're in a snowball fight, duck your head.
If you sing our winter song, then do all three.

Clay Pot Candles

Girl Scouts Ages 11 - 17 Ceremony - New Year Resolution Ceremony
Gather a collection of scrap fabrics form shirts, jeans, dresses, etc. and have each girl make a list of things they want to improve, accomplish, change, etc. in their lives for the year. Have the girls write them down on a piece of fabric, then collect them and keep the resolutions in a safe place (a unique container or time capsule of some sort). At the end of each meeting or once a month have the girls pull out their resolution to see if each girl is accomplishing her goals for the year. Girls can talk out loud about their progress or keep it to themselves. They can share ways to help one another accomplish her goal. Ex. If two girls want to loose 10 lbs by summer maybe they can exercise together or develop a healthy eating routine.

Taps - Full Version
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;
All is well, safely rest; God is night.
Then good night, peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright;
God is near, do not fear
Friend, good night.
