Marvelous Mystery Interest Project Requirements
Girls will learn about deduction, problem solving, and detective skills through chemistry magic, a trail mystery, decoding secret messages, or mystery prints, pictures and games. Girls will have fun with brain teasers, science experiments, mystery games, crafts and more.
To earn the Marvelous Mystery Award, girls ages 11 - 17 must complete 8 activities.
- Interview a private investigator or police detective. Find out why they became a detective, how long it takes and what kind of education/training is required. Make up some of your own questions ahead of time.
- One of the tools of the trade is keeping a written record of evidence. Keep a daily journal or diary. Write a detective story.
- Learn and play five games that require cooperation among players.
- Start a career file on jobs related to a detective, find out all you can about these careers.
- Practice note taking! Select an animal to observe. Record date, time, location, and weather conditions. Take careful detailed notes describing the animal's actions. Try different methods of recording your data. Why is this an important skill for detectives?
- Host a murder mystery party or be part of one.
- Follow a mystery trail or design a mystery trail for others to follow.
- Find out how a scientist solves mysteries. Do a science experiment and solve a science mystery of your own.
- Learn about the different tools a detective uses to collect evidence and solve a mystery. Learn how to fingerprint and how every fingerprint is different. Learn how a detective matches a "lifted" print to a suspect.
- Learn how to use a compass and topographical map. Trace out a hiking route on a topographical map describing what you would see and experience along the way based on the map symbols. Learn how to gauge distance by the length of your pace and the time you walked.
